Image Making Experimentation for Poster

I played around with the same image concept of using a mouse or a hand on a mouse and then brought in different mediums, such as photography, the copying machine, pencil, and the scanner.

Storyboards

Here is the 20 frame storyboard I constructed for my first action of applying toothpaste to the toothbrush. I tried to keep in mind composition and a smooth flow from one frame to the next. The narrative is kept in one perspective, while zooming is used in certain frames to show detail.
I don't know why the first two frames have a white bar dividing them. Guess its a glitch from Exporting the file to a JPEG.

This is the 20 frame storyboard I constructed for my second action of "Brushing Teeth." I wanted to show a before and after affect to create a more interesting story. The teeth start off gross and dirty in the first few frames, but as they get brushed, they get clean and whiter!
Here is the documentation of the handmade mounted storyboards.

Documentation for Teeth Brushing Books

These are the 4 books I refined from the previous 6. I decided to invert the pictures I had created on the copying machine and then I played around with composition to make a more compelling narrative. I re-photographed the other actions with more focus and a better camera so that the images I got were more interesting and up close and personal. I think the cropping I did is attractive and catches your attention. I decided to go with a before and after theme for the "brushing" action so that I could show a comparison of the dirty teeth before they are brushed compared to the bright white smile you get after they are brushed clean!

Poster Ideas: Progress

I have chosen a few directions for my voting poster and I have started flushing out the ideas in more refined pencil sketches. The following are my strongest designs so far.

Semiotics and Tropes: Matrix of Ideas

Here is my process for this portion of the Poster Project:
I created an analog matrix for the following:
• 4-5 rows (horizontal) for rhetorical tropes (your choice)
• 3 columns (vertical) -- 1 each for icon, index and symbol
• 1 additional column for copy (text as symbol)

I explored the matrix via both text and image. I thought through the matrix in phrases and wrote those down in the matrix. I selected signs, (like myspace, fast food, internet, etc) from my mindmap that have the greatest potential for further concept development and paired each with a trope. I then iterated several hand-generated thumbnails for each slot in my matrix.

Mind Map

This took me a long time to get started because I was really confused on what I was going to put on it. I also still feel like my labeling of semiotics signs is off because I kept getting mixed up what was an icon, index, and symbol. I am at a difficult spot right now because I dont have any strong ideas to run with yet for my Matrix that demands 40 thumbnail sketches involving tropes and semiotics. ARRRRGGH!

Storyboard Book Documentation

Here are the 6 books I created for Sound and Motion Class. I used pen, photography, and the photocopier as my mediums.

RHETERIC

I have been doing a lot of researching because I was completely unfamiliar with the different Rhetorical Tropes that we are learning about in Visual Language. I posted a few examples on Tyler's Find and Share, but I wanted to include a few different examples on here.
Parody (It uses recognizable logos with a clever intent)
Parody (Imitates Obama's symbol with satirical intent)
Metonymy (Uses one thing to stand for another)
Irony (Its a play on words for a sarcastic result)
Synecdoche (A part used to represent the whole)
