kyle, i'll make some big picture comments first, then talk about a few details of your task scenarios.

i have been thinking about your project since i commented on genia's post, and have changed my mind about some things. there will also be some slight process shifts coming soon, based on conversations michael and i are having. basically that will entail getting all the structure and flow issues resolved, then working out multiple visual directions afterward.

i realized the problem i'm having with your and genia's project is that you never really showed me "wireframes" but basically went straight to visual design. please refer back to the MX blog post about what wireframes are and how they are to be utilized:

http://mx42502.blogspot.com/2009/09/what-wireframes-look-like.html

in a nutshell, wireframes are allocating space for the elements on your page. it is a loose idea of the screen structure/composition.

by glossing over the core structural issues you are having to address both that and visual design issues simultaneously. i'd say it's much easier to work out ideas about structure first, then put some type, image, and color on later. in addition, it would be highly advisable to work out a few different ideas for how the overall page structure could work. does it have to be a left-side nav? are there alternatives to the horizontal scroll that are even more interesting?

suggestion #1 would be to go back and try some other compositions to see if you can come up with other innovative ideas.

so, a few comments on what you have now:

browse tattoos: not sure why the picture grid has some images colorized yellow or green. does that mean something? how do i know i can roll over the enlarged image to get more info? is it a happy accident, and then i learn that i can do that?

finding a specific artist: the three horizontal sections of photos need to be more clearly labeled, and not just based on rollovers.

most popular shops: are those based on your zip code, or nationally ranked? related to finding those shops, what is the process for rating a shop?

i would not worry too much about these detail issues right now, but i wanted to provide those thoughts in case you end up coming back to these ideas. the more important thing is to backtrack and try to iterate more wireframes to establish alternate page structures and see if you can come up with any new/more interesting ideas.
